Event Experience

01

Neon Drum&Bass Night

'Neon Drum&Bass Night' was my first ever event that I helped to manage from start to finish. It was run as part of Fundraising Week and the event location was in a local bar in Falmouth Town. The event was a huge success, with over 300 attendees and we managed to raise over £200 for the charity ShelterBox.

Within the event team my main role leading up to the event was Treasurer which meant I had to utilise my Budgeting Skills to make sure we could maximise our profit margins to raise a large sum for charity.  On the night, I went wherever needed help which included the ticket booth, where I used my Mathematical Ability to quickly calculate the amount of change to return to attendees. I also, completed simple tasks including distributing glow sticks and alerting security of any misbehaviour from attendees.

VIP - Very Inconvenient Pandemic

'VIP - Very Inconvenient Pandemic' was an online music concert and the first event we ran during the pandemic, hence the name. The event hosted three local student musicians to play during the night all in aid of a Cornish charity 'Young People Cornwall'. The event was a success and over thirty participants attended, and we raised nearly £100 for the charity.

Hosting an online event for the first time came with its own unique set of challenges, but we were able to overcome these as a team. My main responsibilities within the team were to delegate tasks to members which improved my Task Management Skills, as it was my job to make sure every member understood and was happy with their given task to allow it to be completed to a high standard. On the night of the event, I also played a part in hosting and introducing the acts, this helped me to gain more experience with Public Speaking; especially to a group of people of whom I didn't know.

Virtual 10k

Virtual 10k was a sporting event which took place over the course of three weeks, and it featured strongly around the theme of inclusivity. When planning this event, it was very important that it was open to all no matter the age, gender or whether the attendee held any disabilities. Due to this event taking place during a lockdown it was important that we raised money for the charity Mind, and we did in fact manage to raise just under £200.

As part of this event incorporated giving prizes to the participants who won each category, one of my jobs was to source these prizes. For this I had to research options and then make sure they were in our event budget, especially as this event was about raising money for charity. It was also my job to liaise with the charity which boosted my Communication Skills. This event was also primarily an event which allowed me to develop my Fundraising Skills and come up with new and creative ways to raise money for the charity.

SU Performing Arts Showcase

SU Performing Arts Showcase was a large inter-society event that I organised during my time as SU Ballet Society President. The event showcased nine SU societies, as well as a local Truro dance school and was held in AMATA Studios. The event was a huge success, and we sold all 180 tickets in the week prior to the event; allowing us to take over £1000 in ticket sales. This event has recently won the SU Award for Event of the Year!

All participants in the event thoroughly enjoyed the event and mentioned that they found the whole day of tech and dress rehearsals to be very organised and well structured. Attendees at the event mentioned how well put together the event was, which allowed each society to shine on stage.

I truly enjoyed organising the showcase as it was the first event where I fully took on the role of Lead Event Manager. As part of my role, I further developed my Communication Skills as I had to liaise with a range of people including Society Presidents, AMATA staff and SU staff. I had to utilise my Task Management and Time Management Skills in order to set deadlines for music, lighting and risk assessment submissions in the months leading up to showcase.

On the event day I employed my Scheduling Skills as I was in charge of making sure the tech and dress rehearsals ran according to the schedule, and each society was where they needed to be at the correct time. As part of this I was the mediator between the society president and AMATA technical staff, allowing them to agree on lighting options.

After the Show

After the Show, was the official SU Performing Arts Showcase after party which was held a couple of days after the performance. The event sold over 60 tickets and we managed to raise nearly £200 for Fusion Cheerleading's competition fund. Everyone who attended the event thoroughly enjoyed themselves and the night was filled with laughter and joy.

As part of the planning process of this event I met with the venue management to discuss the night as well as create the pub quiz that we would be using. During the event I really strengthened my Public Speaking Skills as I delivered the pub quiz confidently to the attendees. I also utilised my Budgeting Skills by arranging incentives to arrive early as well as the prizes we had available.

Evolving Fashion

Evolving Fashion was my final year event, and it was focused around fashion sustainability and collaboration. As an event team we all held a passion for making the clothing industry more sustainable and educating attendees on how this is possible. Our other focus being collaboration was achieved by utilising garments produced by Falmouth University fashion students, employing Fashion Photography students and AMATA students, as well as having the Fusion Cheerleading Society perform at our event.

In the end our event was a huge success where our attendees learnt about fashion sustainability and were able to view the students Sustainable Garments, meanwhile raising over £100 for Fashion Revolution.

Leading up to the event I took on the role of team leader which allowed me to oversee all Decision Making within the group. In order to move forward quickly with our ideas, we needed to make quick but informed decisions on areas such as venue hire, ticket price and more. I developed my Written Communication skills by liaising with department heads and students via email.

During event set up, I had to think quickly and use my Problem-Solving Skills as we realised, we had sold more tickets than seats we had. However, I came up with an alternative floor plan layout which allowed us to seat all attendees. Once doors had opened, I took on the role of front of house and checked attendees tickets and sold raffle tickets in order to Fundraise more for our charity.
